Person Of Interest In Custody After MLK Park Homicide

UPDATE – A Hammond man was charged with murder after the weekend shooting that killed Jullius Brooks at MLK Park in Hammond.

The alleged shooter Darren A. Ferguson, 40, of Hammond suspected Brooks pulled his 10 year old son’s hair and threw a basketball at his face at the park earlier in the day, according to the affidavit. Ferguson admitted shooting Brooks multiple times.

On August 13, 2022 at approximately 7:00 PM, Hammond Police were dispatched to the 900 block of Lyons Street in reference to a shooting, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg.

Upon arrival, officers located a 38-year-old male lying on the ground who had been shot. The subject was immediately transported to Franciscan Hammond Hospital where he died from his wounds.

The Lake County Coroner has since identified the male as Jullius Brooks, 39, of Hammond. The death was ruled a homicide.

A person of interest has been taken into custody in reference to this crime and charges are expected to be presented to the Lake County Prosecutor’s office Monday morning, Kellogg stated.
