Scrap Fire At Lakeshore Rail In East Chicago

At approximately 7pm East Chicago Fire responded to a reported structure fire near East 145th & Euclid at Lakeshore Rail & Tank Car, according to East Chicago Fire Chief Anthony Serna. A security guard working the property called it in. When crews arrived they encountered heavy flames and black billowing smoke. Crews made entry into the yard and dosed it with the ladder deck gun from Euclid Ave. Serna says a pile of scrap was ignited from possibly doing hot work on the property. Homeowners from the neighboring area called 911 multiple times because of the smoke in the area. Serna expects crews to be on scene a few more hours dosing hot spots. There was no reported injuries as of 8:30pm Serna said in a statement to RNS. Currently Euclid is shut down.

  1. The fire was at the Omnisource scrap yard. Omnisource rents a portion of property from lakeshore. The fire is in no way related to lakeshore rail car services.
