Smoke Alarms Wake Residents To Fire

Sleeping residents were awakened by smoke alarms and alerted to a home fire on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 around 9:40 AM, according to The Crown Point Fore Department. The fire occurred on the 10100 block of Clark Rd in unincorporated Center Township. Merrillville and Saint John Fire Departments were on scene to assist with mutual aid. The residents were able to safely evacuate the home without injury and call 911. Crown Point firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished a fire in the basement before it spread to the rest of the home. Investigators have ruled the fire accidental, caused by an electrical problem. No one was injured during the fire, Crown Point Fire Department said in a release Tuesday.

Crown Point Fire Rescue wants to remind area residents that smoke alarms save lives. Be sure to have a working smoke alarm on every level of the home, including the basement. Alarms should also be inside every bedroom and outside each sleeping area of the home. Test your alarms monthly and change batteries every six months or according to manufacturer instructions.

Families should have a home fire escape plan and conduct fire drills at home. Home fire escape plans should include knowing two ways out of every room, having an outside meeting place, and closing the doors when you leave to slow fire growth.
