Suspect Attacks Police K9 After Chase Ending In Dyer
Update from Dyer Police Activity
On September 28, 2022, at approximately 6:35 PM members of the Gary Police Department and the Multi-Agency Gang Unit were in the area of Ridge Road and Broadway when they observed a black Chrysler 300 that matched the description of an earlier pursuit that day, according to Gary Commander Jack Hamady. As officers confirmed the plate on the vehicle, a traffic stop was initiated for a traffic offense and the driver refused to stop, fleeing in the Black Chrysler.
Officers terminated the pursuit after they lost sight of the vehicle and Lake County Central Dispatch dispatched the vehicle that had fled westbound from officers.
At approximately 6:42 PM officers working on the west side of Gary, observed a vehicle matching the description that had just fled from officers, Hamady told RNS.
The vehicle was at a high rate of speed southbound on Burr Street where it turned eastbound on 25th Ave committing more traffic violations. As officers caught up to the vehicle and initiated a second traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver refused to yield for officers and took off at a high rate of speed eastbound to Grant Street, turning southbound and then entering the expressway (80/94) westbound. Officers continued to pursue after the vehicle to Calumet Ave where the driver exited from the expressway and went into the City of Hammond and then went back southbound into Munster. Officers from outside agencies as well as Lake County Aviation Unit assisted in the pursuit of the black Chrysler 300, Hamady stated.
As the driver entered Dyer he stopped the vehicle in the 700 block of 210th Street and exited from the drivers seat and fled on foot. Lake County Police Aviation Unit called out the direction the suspect was running and advised he had entered the rear of a residence and was under a pool deck.
Gary Police Officers as well as outside agencies surrounded the residence and began the search.
Gary Police Department K9 “Fido” was deployed in the track of the suspect and located the male hiding underneath the deck of a pool where he began to fight and strike the K9 “Fido”.
K9 “Fido” apprehended the male suspect with the assistance of his handler as well as other officers. The suspect was transported to local hospital to be checked and transported to Gary City Jail for booking.
The male was identified as Devon Greenfield, 34 years old from Chicago, Illinois. Devon Greenfield had a felony warrant for his arrest as well as a misdemeanor warrant, Hamady told RNS.
