Teen Arrested After Shot Fired In School

On January 17, 2024 at approximately 9 AM, Gary Police Department received a call for service reference a shot fired at Lighthouse College Prep Academy, located at 725 Clark Road, in Gary, according to Gary Police.

Officers arrived on scene and the school was immediately placed on locked down by staff. School staff had already isolated an individual that was possibly involved. Officers on scene located a handgun on a juvenile suspect and after a brief struggle, he was taken into custody without incident. It is believed he fired a round in the bathroom. He was transported Gary Police Department Juvenile Division.

Detective Greg Fayson is investigating this incident and charges will be presented to Lake County Juvenile Division for Criminal Recklessness, Resisting Law Enforcement, Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm on School Property and Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun (on school property).

In what police are investigating as a separate incident, a juvenile was shot in the foot. At approximately 9:19 AM, Gary Police Department received a call for service reference a walk in Gunshot Wound Victim (GSW) at Methodist NorthLake Hospital.

Officers arrived at the hospital and met with a male juvenile who identified himself and advised officers he had discharged a firearm and sustained a single gunshot wound to his foot. The juvenile advised he accidentally discharged the handgun inside a residence and sustained the injury. He was transported by private party to the hospital. He was treated at hospital and injury is non-life-threatening.
