Two Found Shot In Merrillville After Police Respond To Crash

Around 10PM Wednesday, Merrillville Police responded to a call for a traffic accident on the 8300 block of Rutledge, according to Assistant Chief Kosta Nuses. While responding dispatch received other calls about shots fired in the immediate area.

On arrival police found two gun shot victims, one which was in a vehicle that had hit a tree. Both victims were transported to area hospitals. Victim 1 succumbed to his injuries at the hospital from multiple gun shot wounds. Victim 2 was treated and released with one gun shot wound, this person was hit inside a residence. This is now a homicide investigation which marks Merrillville’s 6th homicide in 2020. A neighbor told RNS they heard 6-10 shots fired around that time.

At this time Police believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public, Nuses told RNS. Merrillville Police have spoken to a person of interest but not charges have been filed as of 7am Thursday.

This investigation is still active at this time and further information will be released in the coming days.
