Whiting Teen Charged In Reckless Homicide Of Friend

On November 7th at approximately 9:10PM. Whiting Officers responded to a report of a gunshot fired in the 1300 Blk. of W. Fred St. in Whiting, according to Whiting Police Chief Don Greer. 

At the scene officers located a 15 year old male victim who had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to the head.  The victim was transported by Whiting Fire Department EMS to St. Catherine’s Hospital and later transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Greer stated. The victim succumbed to his injuries on November 10th

An exhaustive investigation by detectives from the Whiting Police Department determined that the suspect, a 15 year old male from Whiting, had accidentally shot the victim, while handling a .40 caliber semi-automatic firearm.  The serial numbers to the firearm had been defaced, Greer added.

On November 16 charges of juvenile reckless homicide and juvenile possession of an altered firearm were submitted to the Lake County Juvenile Center.  Later that evening, the suspect was apprehended and transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center by the Whiting Police Department.
