Tahkeila Monique Spencer, 43, of Merrillville, is facing felony charges after authorities allege she fired a handgun during a domestic disturbance after discovering her husband with another woman inside their home.
According to court documents, Merrillville Police officers responded around 11:06 a.m. on May 8 to a residence in the 7900 block of Independence Street in reference to a weapons offense.
Investigators said Spencer’s husband told police Spencer returned home around 11 a.m. and walked in on him and another woman having sexual intercourse in the bedroom after he invited the woman to the home when Spencer left earlier that morning. Court documents state Spencer became irate and a verbal argument followed.
According to the affidavit, Spencer’s husband told investigators Spencer grabbed him from behind and began physically fighting with him as the other woman attempted to leave the residence. He stated he restrained Spencer while the other woman tried to flee the home.
The other woman told investigators Spencer repeatedly threatened to shoot both her and Spencer’s husband while they were still inside the bedroom. Police said Spencer allegedly blocked the doorway as the woman attempted to get dressed and leave.
Court documents state the woman eventually exited the bedroom, but Spencer allegedly followed her, grabbed her by the hood and hair, pulled her to the floor and struck her in the head. Spencer’s husband reportedly intervened and pulled Spencer away, allowing the woman to flee the residence.
Investigators said Spencer’s husband also told police Spencer threw a vase at him during the confrontation, striking him in the chest and causing injuries to his arm and face. Officers later observed signs of a disturbance inside the residence, including a broken vase and water on the floor.
According to court documents, Spencer later retrieved a black semiautomatic firearm from inside the residence and returned outside while the other woman attempted to leave in her vehicle. Spencer’s husband told investigators he saw Spencer fire a single shot into the ground before he restrained her and secured the firearm inside his truck.
The other woman, however, told investigators Spencer fired two shots at her vehicle while she attempted to leave the property. She stated she exited the vehicle and ran away as Spencer allegedly chased after her while continuing to threaten to shoot her and asking why she was running away.
Investigators observed a bullet hole near the right rear fender of the woman’s vehicle, along with fresh damage to the taillight and a copper-colored projectile lodged in the tread of the rear tire. Police also recovered a spent shell casing and additional live cartridges near the patio area of the residence.
Police later recovered a firearm from underneath the driver’s seat of a pickup truck parked at the residence.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
