Koilyn Seth Walker, 33, of Valparaiso, was charged June 11 after police said a homeowner found him lying on a couch inside a Hammond residence before allegedly leaving and then re-entering the home through an upstairs window.

According to court documents, Hammond police were dispatched to a residence in the 6400 block of Jefferson Avenue at approximately 7:16 p.m. June 10 for a reported burglary in progress.

The homeowner told police he had been asleep in his bedroom and woke up to use the bathroom before going to the kitchen to make a bowl of cereal. When he exited the kitchen, he allegedly found an unknown man lying on his couch wearing a black shirt and naked from the waist down.

The homeowner told police he was startled and began yelling at the man, asking why he was inside the residence. According to court records, the man, later identified as Walker, allegedly responded that he was trying to get out of the rain and believed the house was abandoned.

Rather than escalating the situation, the homeowner told police he attempted to calm Walker down and offered him a ride to another location in Hammond in an effort to get him out of the residence. After Walker exited the home, the homeowner said he locked the residence and walked to his vehicle to start it while Walker headed toward the rear of the property.

When the homeowner could no longer locate Walker, he became concerned that Walker had climbed a ladder located on the rear porch and entered the residence again through an upstairs window. He then called 911.

A witness told police he observed an unknown man wearing jean shorts and socks climbing a ladder and entering the residence through an upstairs window.

Police deployed a K-9 to search the residence because officers did not know whether the suspect was armed. Officers reported garbage was piled chest-high in portions of the home, forcing them to recall the K-9 and limiting access through the rear door. After additional announcements, police said they heard movement upstairs and eventually observed Walker walking toward them wearing a white hat, gray sweatshirt and red-and-black pajama pants.

Walker was taken into custody without incident. Police said he was still wearing the black shirt and jean shorts described by witnesses underneath the outer layer of clothing.

The homeowner told police he wished to pursue charges, alleging Walker knowingly entered his residence twice without permission.

Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
