GARY, IN — The Gary Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at approximately 10:40 p.m. near the intersection of 7th Avenue and Lake Street in Gary.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a maroon Buick SUV traveling eastbound on 7th Avenue struck a black moped, which was also traveling eastbound. The impact threw the male operator from the moped, resulting in him being struck by the SUV.
Personnel from the Gary Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the victim to Methodist Hospital in Gary, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the family by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the SUV, identified as a 33-year-old female, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. The crash remains under active investigation by the Gary Police Department Traffic Division.
