Jaquan Kyle Jones, 19, of Hammond, is facing felony charges after police alleged they recovered a Glock handgun equipped with a fully automatic conversion device following a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash.
According to court documents, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department High Crime Unit were participating in a State Line Carjacking saturation patrol in Hammond on May 27 when they observed three occupants in a silver Nissan Sentra not wearing seat belts.
Investigators alleged the vehicle’s driver accelerated away after officers attempted a traffic stop near 165th Street and Jackson Avenue. Police said the vehicle traveled through several Hammond streets at a high rate of speed and nearly caused a collision before officers deployed spike strips near 165th Street and Blaine Avenue.
Court documents state the driver attempted to avoid the spike strips, lost control of the vehicle, struck a street light, and crashed into a fence near 165th Street and Garfield Avenue.
Police reported the occupants failed to comply with commands following the crash and continued reaching around inside the vehicle. Officers allegedly had to force doors and windows open to take the occupants into custody.
According to investigators, Jones was seated in the front passenger seat and resisted officers by pulling his hands away and tucking them beneath his body while officers attempted to handcuff him.
Police said Jones informed officers he had a handgun in his pants. Investigators reported recovering a Glock 23 handgun loaded with a live round in the chamber and an extended magazine. Officers alleged the firearm was equipped with an auto sear switch, a device that converts the handgun into a fully automatic machine gun.
Authorities reported recovering 21 rounds of ammunition from the firearm.
Investigators also recovered a second Glock handgun from the driver’s side floorboard and an AR-style pistol from a backpack located in the rear passenger area of the vehicle. Police further reported locating approximately 43 grams of suspected marijuana inside the backpack.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
