Drequain Lemeile Burr, 27, of Lake Station, is facing multiple charges after Lake Station Police alleged he battered a woman during a domestic dispute and later escaped from a patrol vehicle while being transported to jail.
According to court documents, officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Oklahoma Street in Lake Station at approximately 6:03 a.m. on June 1. Police had previously responded to the residence earlier that morning regarding a disturbance, and the parties had separated.
Investigators said a woman later told officers Burr had bitten her on the shoulder and punched her in the stomach. Police observed bruising on her shoulder that was consistent with a bite mark. The woman reportedly told officers she had been afraid to disclose the incident during the earlier police response.
Court documents allege the incident began after the woman returned home and went upstairs to sleep. She told police she woke up when Burr threw one of the child’s toys at her face and told her to wake up because the baby was crying. After Burr left and later returned to the residence, the woman was preparing a bottle for the child when an argument occurred. Investigators allege Burr then bit her shoulder and punched her in the stomach.
Police took Burr into custody and placed him in a patrol vehicle for transport to the Lake County Jail.
According to court documents, officers soon discovered Burr had removed his seatbelt and was attempting to open the patrol vehicle door. After officers stopped and re-secured him multiple times, Burr allegedly climbed into the front of the patrol vehicle and exited through the driver’s side door with his hands in front of his body.
Police said Burr ignored commands to stop and ran from officers. Court documents state officers eventually used a Taser, but Burr remained noncompliant. Officers ultimately used ankle shackles and three sets of handcuffs to secure him before completing the transport to jail.
