Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris is encouraging families across North America to spend more time outdoors this summer by introducing children to the sport of fishing through the company’s annual “Gone Fishing” initiative. As part of the effort, Bass Pro Shops is donating more than 55,000 rods and reels to youth-focused nonprofit organizations throughout the United States and Canada.

The donation continues a decade-long tradition that has now resulted in more than 500,000 rods and reels being distributed to young anglers through nonprofit partners. The goal of the program is to help children experience the excitement of fishing and develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.

“The most special memories in life come from spending time in nature with the people you care about,” Morris said in a statement. “We want to help as many kids as possible discover the joy of fishing, and we’re excited to encourage families to get outside and take someone they love fishing this summer.”

The annual Gone Fishing celebration officially begins Thursday, June 11, when Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s locations across North America host special donation events with local nonprofit organizations. During those events, youth groups will receive fishing equipment while conservation partners share information about how fishing licenses help fund conservation efforts in local communities.

The donated rods and reels are made possible through Bass Pro Shops’ annual Spring Classic Fishing Event, where customers trade in gently used fishing equipment that is refurbished and passed on to the next generation of anglers.

Families will also have an opportunity to participate in free in-store fishing events scheduled for June 13-14 and June 20-21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include free catch-and-release fishing in stocked ponds, fishing-themed crafts, giveaways, and expert instruction from Bass Pro Shops Outfitters. Children who catch a fish will also receive a free commemorative photo download.

As part of the celebration, families are invited to submit photos to the Johnny Morris Bass Pro Shops Kids’ Braggin’ Board, an online showcase highlighting memorable fishing adventures and first catches. The initiative is designed to inspire more families to enjoy the outdoors together and create lasting summer memories.

Bass Pro Shops, founded by Johnny Morris in Springfield, Missouri, has grown from a small fishing tackle operation in 1972 to nearly 200 retail locations across North America. The company says its continued focus on conservation and outdoor recreation remains at the heart of programs like Gone Fishing, which aim to connect the next generation with nature through fishing.
