Mihajah M. Evans, 21, of Chicago, has been charged in Lake County after police alleged she participated in an organized retail theft incident at a Highland Macy’s that resulted in more than $4,200 in merchandise being stolen, according to court documents.

According to court records, the incident occurred on June 2, 2025, when police were dispatched to the Macy’s store in the 10400 block of Indianapolis Boulevard after a caller reported seeing two women conceal merchandise in bags and leave the store without paying.

Police said the caller observed the women enter a maroon Honda sedan and followed the vehicle to a shopping center in Schererville while contacting authorities. According to court documents, officers located the suspects and a male driver at the shopping center before they could leave the area.

Investigators reported finding multiple bags inside the vehicle containing clothing and other merchandise, many of which still had security tags attached and no receipts. Court documents allege Evans and a co-defendant initially refused several requests to identify themselves before eventually providing their names.

According to court records, Macy’s employees told police the suspects entered the store and immediately began placing merchandise into outside bags. Employees reported the suspects selected additional merchandise, passed all points of purchase without attempting to pay, and left the store with the items.

Store personnel later identified merchandise allegedly taken from Macy’s and provided itemized documentation showing a total loss of $4,237.50. According to court documents, the merchandise included clothing, accessories, cosmetics, fragrance and other retail items from brands such as Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Adidas, North Face, Steve Madden, DKNY, Calvin Klein and Karl Lagerfeld.

A witness told police she observed the women carrying overstuffed bags from the store before entering the vehicle. The witness followed the suspects to Schererville and directed responding officers to the vehicle.
