From all reports this morning, Griffith appears to have taken the brunt of last night’s severe storms.

The storm’s hail core rapidly intensified over Highland, where hail up to 1 inch in diameter was reported. The storm then pushed into Griffith, bringing damaging straight-line winds with a possible downburst that left a trail of destruction. Numerous trees, power poles, and power lines are down throughout town. Broad Street is among several roadways that remain closed due to storm damage.
Meanwhile, Merrillville experienced significant flooding after torrential rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems in a short amount of time.

NIPSCO is reporting over 20,000 without power this morning. Some restoration times may take days.

Griffith officials released the following update:
The Town of Griffith experienced a major wind, hail, and rain event this evening. Police, Fire, and Public Works resources have been deployed throughout town.
There are trees and limbs down in multiple areas, numerous streets are currently blocked, and localized flooding has occurred due to extremely heavy rainfall. There are also numerous downed power lines throughout town.
Please avoid unnecessary travel while crews work to clear roads and respond to calls for service.
Officials are currently assessing damage and will provide additional information regarding further assistance as it becomes available.
