On 7/5/2026, at approximately 7:41 a.m., the Porter County Jail Division discovered a 70-year-old male inmate that was having a medical emergency.

Jail Personnel and EMS attempted life saving measures on the inmate. Tragically, the attempts were unsuccessful and the inmate passed away while at the Jail.

The Detective Bureau responded and this is currently under investigation. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

The inmate has been identified as Gene A. Rush (DOB 8/27/1955) of Valparaiso, IN.
