An older man was rescued by Gary firefighters after becoming trapped inside a smoke-filled apartment during an early morning fire Tuesday.
The fire was dispatched at approximately 12:55 a.m. at a 2½-story, three-unit apartment building in the 1800 block of Connecticut Street.
According to information provided from the scene, the first arriving fire officer was met by a resident who reported that an elderly man was still inside an upstairs apartment. By the time crews entered the building, it was heavily charged with smoke, with visibility described as nearly zero.
Firefighters advanced to the second floor, located the unresponsive man, and carried him from the building. He was reportedly still breathing when he was rescued.
The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus. It’s believed he had regained consciousness by the time he arrived at the hospital.
There has been no word on the cause of the fire or the extent of damage to the building. The victim’s current condition has not yet been released.
