A Glenwood man is facing felony charges after Illinois State Police say an alleged road rage incident escalated into gunfire on Interstate 94 before ending with his arrest in Northwest Indiana.

According to Illinois State Police, troopers responded at approximately 2:02 a.m. on July 18 to reports of an expressway shooting on I-94 southbound near 130th Street in Chicago.

Investigators allege that during a road rage confrontation, the suspect fired a handgun at another vehicle. Authorities said the victim’s vehicle was not struck by the gunfire, and no injuries were reported.

State police quickly identified the suspect vehicle after both vehicles crossed into Gary, Indiana, where the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police assisted in stopping the vehicles. The suspect, identified as Byron A. Coleman, 50, of Glenwood, Illinois, was taken into custody without further incident.

On July 19, Illinois State Police presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which approved one count of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, a Class 4 felony, against Coleman.

Coleman remains in custody pending his first court appearance.

Illinois State Police continue to remind motorists not to engage with aggressive drivers.
