Romel Rashad Sanders, 18, of Northbrook, Illinois, and Brandon Arnez McCambry, 18, of Chicago, Illinois, are facing multiple felony charges after authorities say they attempted to rob a longtime friend of his handgun during a planned meeting in the parking lot of the Cabela’s store in the 7700 block of Cabela Drive in Hammond.

According to court documents, the victim had arranged to meet Sanders, whom he had known since childhood, so the victim could purchase AR-15 charging handles on Sanders’ behalf. During the meeting, Sanders allegedly introduced the victim to McCambry, who was holding a Glock Model 23 handgun and offered to sell it to him. The victim declined. P

Investigators allege that as the group walked toward the store, Sanders suddenly grabbed the victim from behind and began struggling with him while attempting to take the victim’s Glock handgun from his waistband. Police said McCambry joined the struggle and attempted to assist Sanders in taking the firearm.

According to court records, the victim was eventually able to draw his own handgun, prompting Sanders and McCambry to stop the attack and walk away. The victim suffered scrapes, bruises, sore ribs, and ripped clothing during the altercation, police said. A family member who witnessed the incident told investigators they believed the two men were attempting to steal the victim’s handgun.

Responding Hammond police officers quickly located Sanders, McCambry, and a third man walking through the Cabela’s parking lot. Officers observed fresh cuts and bruising on Sanders’ knuckles and hands. Investigators also reviewed Cabela’s surveillance video, which they said showed Sanders and McCambry attacking the victim before he fell to the ground.

Detectives later interviewed Sanders after advising him of his rights. According to the probable cause affidavit, Sanders admitted meeting the victim at Cabela’s, acknowledged fighting with him, and confirmed many details of the encounter. However, Sanders denied attempting to rob the victim, claiming the confrontation began over an argument involving money.
