Namik Kemal Oner, 35, of Griffith, is facing multiple misdemeanor charges after police allege he struck a parked pickup at a Griffith gas station, pinning a woman between its passenger door and frame before leaving the scene.

According to court documents, Griffith Police responded around 12:17 a.m. August 20 to the 7-Eleven in the 800 block of North Broad Street for a report of a woman struck by a vehicle.

A witness told police a man driving a black GMC Sierra backed into the open passenger door of her parked Toyota pickup. Her daughter was standing beside the open door and was allegedly pinned between the door and the vehicle’s frame as it repeatedly closed against her.

Both women reportedly yelled for the driver to stop. The driver eventually pulled forward, exited his truck and approached them.

According to the affidavit, the women told the driver he had damaged their vehicle and injured one of them. The driver allegedly said he owned a mechanic shop and could repair the damage.

When the women said they were calling police because someone had been injured, the driver allegedly begged them not to call and said he would “fix everything.” He reportedly entered his truck and quickly drove away when one of the women called 911.

The women separately identified Oner from photographic lineups, according to court documents. One witness told police she believed Oner was intoxicated because he smelled of alcohol and appeared to have difficulty maintaining his balance.

Police later found Oner sleeping in the driver’s seat of the GMC Sierra outside a residence in Hammond. The keys were reportedly in the ignition, and officers documented a heavy odor of metabolized alcohol coming from inside the truck.

Oner allegedly acknowledged being at the gas station and speaking with the women but claimed there was no damage and nobody had been injured.

Police said Oner displayed signs of impairment during their investigation. A certified chemical breath test conducted at approximately 1:59 a.m. reportedly recorded an alcohol concentration of .197%.

Police documented impressions matching the interior door panel on the back of the injured woman’s left leg. She reported pain but declined medical treatment at the scene.

Oner was transported to the Lake County Jail.
