PORTAGE — A 63-year-old Portage man faces two felony charges after an investigation that began with information provided to police in Dyer regarding suspected child sex abuse material, according to the Portage Police Department.

David M. Gdowski, 63, was arrested Thursday, Oct. 1, following the execution of a search warrant at his Portage home.

According to police, the investigation began Sept. 21 when Portage Police Detective Sergeant Nicole Heuberger received information from the Dyer Police Department that a Portage resident was possibly in possession of child sex abuse material, commonly referred to as CSAM.

Detectives interviewed the original complainant and were provided a cellphone reportedly belonging to Gdowski that allegedly contained images of CSAM, police said.

The phone was transferred to the Lake County High Tech Crimes Unit on Sept. 22 for forensic analysis. Investigators received the results Sept. 28, and police subsequently obtained a search warrant Sept. 30 for a residence in the 600 block of 6th Street in Portage.

Detectives executed the warrant on the morning of Oct. 1 and contacted Gdowski at the residence. Police said several electronic devices were recovered during the search and investigators were able to view suspected CSAM on one of the devices.

The remaining electronic devices were seized and will undergo additional forensic examination.

Gdowski was taken into custody and transported to the Porter County Jail, where he was being held without bond at the time of the department’s release.

He is charged with two counts of possession of child sex abuse material: one Level 4 felony involving material depicting a child under 12 and one Level 5 felony involving material depicting a child under 18.

Portage Police thanked the Dyer Police Department, Lake County High Tech Crime Unit and Porter County Prosecutor’s Office for assisting in the investigation.

The charges are allegations, and Gdowski is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
