JASPER COUNTY — A Chicago woman who allegedly called 911 on herself while driving intoxicated was arrested early Sunday morning after Indiana State Police located her swerving across Interstate 65 and forcing other motorists to take evasive action.

According to Indiana State Police, dispatchers received a 911 call around 1:36 a.m. on November 1, 2026, from a woman later identified as Meisha Thomas, 42, of Chicago. Police said Thomas sounded highly intoxicated and provided erratic information during the call.

Dispatchers tracked her location as she traveled southbound on I-65 near the 240-mile marker, close to the Lowell exit in southern Lake County.

Trooper Haddon responded and located Thomas driving between 30 and 50 mph in a posted 70 mph zone after she entered Jasper County. Police said her vehicle was swerving across lanes, impeding traffic and forcing other drivers to brake or take evasive action.

Thomas initially failed to stop for the trooper’s emergency lights and siren before eventually stopping in the left lane of the interstate.

During the traffic stop, Trooper Haddon observed several signs of impairment, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, poor coordination and a strong odor of alcohol.

Thomas reportedly told the trooper she had left a casino in Gary and was heading home to Chicago. However, investigators determined she had traveled approximately 36 miles in the wrong direction.

Police said Thomas was too impaired to safely complete field sobriety testing and refused chemical testing under Indiana’s implied consent law. Troopers subsequently obtained a search warrant for a blood draw, which was conducted at a local hospital.

The encounter took another unusual turn when Thomas allegedly began making repeated inappropriate sexual comments and physical advances toward the arresting trooper.

According to police, Thomas attempted to kiss the trooper while he was securing her seatbelt and continued making kissing gestures, sounds and suggestive remarks despite repeated instructions to stop. One of those incidents resulted in an additional battery charge.

Thomas was transported to the Jasper County Jail and preliminarily charged with Battery Against a Public Safety Official, a Level 6 felony; Operating While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, a Class A misdemeanor; Operating While Intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor; and Reckless Driving, a Class C misdemeanor.

Thomas is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
