GRIFFITH — The Town of Griffith continues to recover from the severe storm that swept through the community on the evening of June 24, with town officials, police, firefighters, and public works crews remaining actively engaged in cleanup operations.
Town officials announced that the Griffith Town Council will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 1, at 11:15 a.m. to formally declare a local emergency related to the extensive storm damage.
As cleanup continues, officials thanked residents for their patience and the outpouring of support shown throughout the community.
“The way neighbors have stepped up to assist one another reflects the strength of the Griffith community,” the town said in a statement.
Residents whose homes or property sustained storm damage are encouraged to report it to the State of Indiana by calling 211 or visiting in211.org and selecting the Damage Reporting option. Officials say submitting damage reports helps provide state emergency management officials with an accurate assessment of the storm’s impact and may assist with future recovery efforts.
The town is also urging residents to take precautions as dangerously high temperatures move into the area this week. Anyone needing access to a cooling center is asked to contact the Lake County Dispatch Center’s non-emergency line at 219-660-0000 for assistance locating an available cooling location. Residents experiencing a heat-related medical emergency should call 911 immediately.
Garbage collection will continue on its normal Thursday schedule. Residents with additional storm-related debris may place extra trash at the curb or alley alongside their regular garbage. Tree limbs and branches should be placed in the parkway near the street for pickup by Griffith Public Works, which continues working to remove storm debris as quickly as possible.
Town officials thanked residents once again for their continued cooperation, patience, and support as Griffith works toward a full recovery from last week’s storm.
