HAMMOND — The City of Hammond has announced a proposed commercial redevelopment that would bring the city’s first Chipotle Mexican Grill and first Dutch Bros Coffee to 6525 Indianapolis Boulevard.
The proposal is scheduled to go before the Hammond Board of Zoning Appeals this week as part of the city’s development approval process.
The planned project would redevelop the longtime home of Petros Restaurant, a local landmark that has served generations of Hammond residents. City officials expressed gratitude to the Petros family for their decades of service to the community and wished them well as they prepare for retirement.
“This is another exciting investment in one of Hammond’s busiest commercial corridors,” Mayor Thomas M. McDermott Jr. said. “While it is always bittersweet to see a longtime local business close, we are grateful to the Petros family for everything they have meant to our community. We also look forward to welcoming Chipotle and Dutch Bros to Hammond as we continue to attract quality development and expand dining options for our residents and visitors.”
The proposed development would feature two standalone buildings with drive-thru service. The site is located directly across from the Hammond Sportsplex and the Hammond YMCA, an area city officials say has experienced significant commercial and recreational growth in recent years.
Chipotle Mexican Grill is a nationally recognized fast-casual restaurant chain known for burritos, bowls, tacos, and salads made with fresh ingredients. Dutch Bros Coffee is one of the nation’s fastest-growing drive-thru coffee companies, offering handcrafted coffee, espresso drinks, teas, lemonades, and energy beverages.
If approved, construction is expected to begin later this summer, with both businesses anticipated to open in the spring of 2027.
City officials said the project reflects Hammond’s ongoing efforts to encourage redevelopment, strengthen the local economy, create jobs, and expand amenities for residents and visitors alike.
