Roy D. Hunt Sr., 61, of Harvey, Illinois, has been charged after an early morning traffic stop on I-80 in Lake County led to the discovery of suspected cocaine and an impaired driving investigation.
According to court documents, an Indiana State Police trooper observed a blue Chevrolet stopped on the shoulder of I-80 near the 1-mile marker at approximately 2:39 a.m. on June 3 and stopped to check if the driver needed assistance. Hunt reportedly told investigators he believed he had a flat tire.
Court documents state that when asked if he had a valid driver’s license, Hunt told investigators he was going to court for it later this month. Investigators subsequently determined his driving privileges were suspended and that he had a prior conviction for driving while suspended.
According to court records, investigators observed signs of impairment and an open alcohol container inside the vehicle. Hunt later admitted he had consumed a small amount of alcohol. Police reported he provided a portable breath sample that registered .105. Investigators also reported Hunt failed various field sobriety tests and later refused a chemical test. A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw, with results pending.
During a search of the vehicle, investigators located two baggies containing approximately 5.8 grams of a substance that field-tested positive for cocaine, according to court documents. Court records state Hunt told investigators the substance was medicine used for digestion and claimed the white powder observed in his nostril was from a sexual encounter earlier.
Investigators also learned Hunt has a prior conviction for manufacturing or dealing a controlled substance in Cook County, Illinois, according to court records.
