Kyle R. Laffoon, 30, of Morocco, is facing multiple charges after deputies allege he entered a church in the 100 block of West College Avenue in Morocco while it was closed and took items from inside.

According to court documents, Newton County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 8:16 p.m. August 12 after receiving a report of a man inside a church that was closed at the time. A witness identified Laffoon as the man who allegedly fled from inside the church when the witness arrived. The witness then followed Laffoon to his residence and contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

While investigating inside the church, deputies found that Laffoon had allegedly eaten applesauce, drank coffee creamer and attempted to eat a Popsicle that had been inside a freezer. According to the probable cause affidavit, remnants of the items were left on a counter in the church kitchen.

The witness told deputies he saw Laffoon walking out of the church carrying a drinking pitcher and a white bag. Laffoon allegedly got onto a bicycle and rode to his residence approximately two blocks away with the items still in his possession.

According to court documents, the witness said Laffoon then ran from the rear of the garage into the residence. Deputies reported they were unable to locate the allegedly stolen items due to the disarray inside the home. Laffoon was subsequently transported to the Newton County Jail.

Court records also show the State filed a habitual offender allegation against Laffoon, citing three prior unrelated felony convictions: a 2022 Newton County conviction for possession of a narcotic drug, a 2017 Porter County conviction for theft and a 2015 Newton County conviction for neglect of a dependent.
