Kurt Bielfeldt, 70, of Brook, Indiana, has been charged in Newton County following what investigators described as a confrontation involving a handgun and an alleged fictitious FBI badge during a dispute over grass clippings.
According to court documents, officers were dispatched around 12:30 p.m. on May 12, 2026, to the 1000 block of Northmeare Street in Kentland in reference to a disturbance. Investigators stated the caller told police he was mowing an easement when a white Jeep pulled up and the driver complained grass was being blown into the roadway.
The probable cause affidavit states the caller told police the argument escalated when the driver allegedly displayed what “appeared to be a F.B.I. badge” and stated, “I’m with the F.B.I.” Court documents state the caller responded that he “did not care” before telling the man to leave.
Investigators allege the driver then reached toward the passenger side of the vehicle and produced a “1911 style handgun with custom wood grips.” According to court documents, the driver allegedly loaded a magazine into the firearm and stated, “How about we do this then?” before driving away from the scene.
According to investigators, officers later traveled to a residence in the 1500 block of West 600 South in Brook and spoke with Bielfeldt. Court records state Bielfeldt admitted he spoke with the caller earlier in the day and claimed grass and dirt had been blown onto his Jeep.
The affidavit states Bielfeldt told investigators he felt threatened after allegedly being told he would be beaten up, and said he grabbed the firearm from the passenger seat and “showed it” to the other man “to de-escalate the situation.”
According to court documents, when asked whether he identified himself as law enforcement, Bielfeldt allegedly told officers he showed the man “a card that says he trains F.B.I. and law enforcement in firearms training.” Investigators further stated that when asked to produce the badge, Bielfeldt allegedly responded that he had burned it after returning home.
Court records state Bielfeldt later unlocked a safe inside the residence and produced a Kimber 1911 handgun with dark wood grips before being taken into custody without incident and transported to the Newton County Jail.
