Austin Michael White, 29, of Porter, was arrested after police allegedly found him walking naked near the Porter Police Department early Sunday morning.

According to court documents, a Porter police officer was driving toward the department around 4:20 a.m. August 23 when he entered the alley between the police station and Porter State Bank.

The officer reported seeing a man wearing a green shirt walking through the alley. When the man noticed the officer, he allegedly moved quickly behind the bank’s dumpster and then continued walking west.

Police said the alley was poorly lit, and the officer initially could not determine whether the man was wearing shorts or underwear. The officer temporarily lost sight of him but continued driving through the alley to make sure he was OK.

As the officer drove behind the Whistle Stop Bar, he located the man, later identified as White, sitting on a staircase leading to apartments above the business in the 200 block of Lincoln Street.

When asked whether he had been trying to avoid the officer, White allegedly responded, “just a little bit.”

As the officer approached, he reportedly noticed White’s jeans sitting next to him on the stairs. When the officer reached the bottom of the staircase and looked up, he discovered that White was not wearing underwear or anything else covering his genitals.

According to the affidavit, White walked down the stairs carrying his pants while his penis and buttocks were fully exposed.

Once he reached the ground, White allegedly began putting on his pants and stated, “I mean this is as bad as it looks, I guess.”

Police said White had difficulty maintaining his balance while attempting to put on his pants. The officer reported that White had slurred speech, watery eyes, a flushed and red face and a strong odor of intoxicants. White was also described as unsteady and swaying, although police characterized his attitude as friendly.

White allegedly said he lived in a nearby trailer park and intended to use an Uber to get home. When asked why he had been sitting on someone else’s staircase, White reportedly replied, “they were convenient.”

According to court documents, White admitted he had been drinking and doing stupid things but said he was trying to be discreet. When the officer pointed out that White had been walking directly beside the police station, White allegedly stated, “I didn’t really think about the police station, better than some grandma’s house I guess.”

White then gathered his belongings and attempted to get himself situated. According to the affidavit, White provided his driver’s license and stated he was “a little drunk and a little horny.”

White reportedly told police the bar had closed around 2:30 a.m. When asked whether he had been walking around without his pants for approximately two hours, White initially believed it was only around 3 a.m.

After checking the current time on his phone, White allegedly stated, “oh shit maybe about an hour, yeah.”

Police said White was trying to arrange an Uber ride home but was unable to operate his phone. White also allegedly admitted that he had engaged in this type of behavior before but had never been caught.

Because of White’s level of intoxication, police said they administered a preliminary breath test to determine whether medical clearance would be necessary. According to the affidavit, the test produced a result of 0.157%.

White was transported to the Porter County Jail without incident. While inventorying his belongings, police removed a pack of cigarettes that had been inside his shirt pocket.

Stuck to the cigarette wrapper was a small clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, according to court documents.

When police showed White the bag and asked what it contained, White allegedly replied, “probably what you think it is.”

While jail staff conducted White’s intake, police used a multidrug field-test kit on the powder. The substance allegedly produced a positive field-test result for cocaine.

Before the officer left the jail, White allegedly apologized, offered a handshake and thanked the officer.

Charges filed August 24, 2026:

Possession of Cocaine, less than five grams — Level 6 felony

Public Nudity — Class A misdemeanor

Public Intoxication, endangering his own life — Class B misdemeanor

Public Nudity — Class B misdemeanor
