Joseph D. Prude, 52, of Calumet City, was arrested Sunday after police responded to a disturbance at Shoppers World in Merrillville.

According to court documents, officers were called to the store around 4:56 p.m. August 23 for a report of a man causing a disturbance. Employees told police they believed Prude had taken numerous items from the store earlier but left before they could determine what was missing.

Prude allegedly returned to the store carrying the merchandise in a large suitcase. When employees confronted him about the items, he allegedly began yelling and causing a disturbance.

Police said Prude continued yelling despite officers repeatedly telling him to stop. He allegedly called store employees “fucking bitches,” making it difficult for officers to obtain statements.

Officers detained Prude and learned that he also had an active warrant through Hobart City Court. As officers escorted him outside, Prude allegedly continued yelling at employees and pulled his arm away from an officer.

Police said officers restrained Prude against a patrol vehicle while searching him. Prude then allegedly told one officer, “I am going to kill you.”

After being placed inside the police vehicle, Prude allegedly continued making threats, telling an officer, “I got something for you don’t you worry,” and “I am going to fuck you up.” He also allegedly attempted to kick the officer while being transported.

Prude was taken to the Lake County Jail.
