Luis Angel Brito-Telleria, 23, of Allen Park, Michigan, was charged after Indiana State Police said cocaine, marijuana, a handgun, and drug paraphernalia were found during a traffic stop on I-90 in Lake County.
According to the probable cause affidavit, a trooper was working patrol on April 9, 2026, on I-90 in Lake County when he observed a blue Ford traveling 87 miles per hour in a posted 70 mile per hour zone near the 2.5 mile marker. The trooper then got behind the vehicle and later paced it at 94 miles per hour in a posted 45 mile per hour zone while other motorists were on the roadway.
Police said the vehicle was pulled over and Brito-Telleria was identified by his Michigan license. The trooper stated he smelled what he recognized as the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and Brito-Telleria said he had smoked earlier in the day. Court documents allege Brito-Telleria then provided a baggie from the center console containing dispensary-labeled suspected marijuana.
According to the affidavit, Brito-Telleria also told police there was a black handgun in the trunk that he had forgotten about.
Court documents state officers found a bag with white powder residue, a small spoon with white powdery substance, a scale with a white powdery substance, numerous sandwich bags, a red funnel with a white powdery substance on it, and a marijuana grinder in the center console. A black handgun was found in the trunk.
Police said Brito-Telleria admitted to possessing marijuana and the marijuana grinder. He also admitted the scale with the residue was his and said the funnel contained creatine powder, which the trooper stated is used as a cutting agent for cocaine. According to the affidavit, Brito-Telleria also claimed ownership of the baggie with the white residue and admitted it was cocaine, though before he admitted it was cocaine, he then denied ownership of it.
The affidavit states Brito-Telleria was transported to jail and, prior to entering the jail, provided a baggie of white substance from his shoe that weighed 8 grams and field-tested positive for cocaine. Police also stated the residue on the scale from the vehicle field-tested positive for cocaine, and the substance in the baggie of suspected marijuana field-tested positive for marijuana.
According to the affidavit, police believed the suspected cocaine was possessed with intent to deliver based on the scale, baggies, handgun, spoon, and funnel with admitted cutting agent.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
