Steven Kyle Riley, 34,of Alsip, Illinois, is facing multiple charges after police say he fled from officers, crashed his vehicle, and was found with drugs, a firearm, and cash following a reported theft at Southlake Mall.

According to court documents, on April 19, 2026, officers were dispatched to Southlake Mall in reference to a theft involving a white male who had stolen property from Macy’s and left in a white Ford Escape. An officer observed a vehicle matching that description and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated and fled.

Police reported the vehicle cut through a parking lot in an attempt to evade officers, and a pursuit was initiated. The vehicle continued fleeing toward the area of US 30 and Mississippi Street before crashing and rolling into a grassy area near where Mississippi Street becomes Marcella Boulevard.

According to court documents, the driver fell out of the vehicle through the sunroof after the crash and fled on foot. Officers pursued the suspect and apprehended him near a tree after deploying a K9. Police reported Riley physically resisted being taken into custody.

Inside the crashed vehicle, officers located a Nike bag containing $6,200 in U.S. currency secured with rubber bands. Police also reported locating approximately 6.5 grams of a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine near the passenger side of the vehicle, along with a digital scale with white residue and a Sig Sauer handgun underneath the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Investigators reported that Riley was wearing a Nike long sleeve shirt that was identified as merchandise stolen from Macy’s. Loss prevention indicated Riley fled the store with the unrecovered item and left behind three damaged apparel items, with a reported loss of $344.

Court documents indicate Riley has a prior theft conviction, making him ineligible to possess a handgun. Police believe that based on the amount of cash, the presence of a scale, and the circumstances of the incident, the cocaine was possessed with the intent to deliver.

Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
