CROWN POINT, IN — Derrick C. Pouncey has been found guilty on all charges following a jury trial in Lake County Superior Court, according to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.

The charges stem from an April 10, 2024 shooting at a home in the 2000 block of Roosevelt Street in Gary that killed husband and wife Kyle Matthews and Klorya Matthews. A third victim, Malieke Thomas, was also shot and survived, but was left paralyzed from the waist down, according to court documents.

Investigators said the incident began as a domestic disturbance involving Pouncey and Ashley Price at the residence. According to the affidavit, family members were called to the home to help remove children from the situation. Kyle and Klorya Matthews, along with Antoinette Taylor, arrived to assist.

Witnesses told investigators that an argument escalated near the front doorway. Court documents state Pouncey struck Klorya Matthews before Kyle Matthews intervened. Investigators said Pouncey then produced a rifle and opened fire, shooting both Kyle and Klorya Matthews. Thomas later told investigators he arrived outside the home, saw the couple down, and was shot after trying to protect Taylor.

Police recovered 29 spent 7.62 casings from the scene, all fired from the same weapon, according to the affidavit. Autopsy reports showed Klorya Matthews died from five gunshot wounds, while Kyle Matthews died from four gunshot wounds. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

Pouncey later went to a Chicago hospital with gunshot wounds and initially claimed he had been robbed, but investigators said that account was not supported by evidence. He later admitted to police that he lied about the robbery.

The jury found Pouncey guilty of:

  • Murder with a firearm enhancement
  • Murder with a firearm enhancement
  • Attempted Murder with a firearm enhancement, Level 3 Felony
  • Domestic Battery, Class A Misdemeanor
  • Battery, Class B Misdemeanor

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter thanked Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Lindsey Lanham and Maureen Koonce for prosecuting the case, along with the officers, detectives, forensic personnel, medical experts, and witnesses involved in securing the conviction.

Sentencing will be scheduled for a later date.
