Jason Lee Fields, 47, of Chesterton, is facing felony charges after police said he falsely identified himself as a police officer while approaching a group of students parked near Valparaiso University late Wednesday night.
According to court documents, Valparaiso University Police investigated the incident after two women reported they were sitting in vehicles with three other friends in Lot 14 at Valparaiso University around 10:42 p.m. on May 14 when a black SUV approached them.
Police said the driver, later identified as Jason Lee Fields, pulled in front of one of the vehicles with the driver’s side facing the front of the vehicle. One of the women told investigators the driver was wearing a black hat with the word “POLICE” printed on the front.
According to the affidavit, the driver then yelled, “Hello ma’am, I’m going to need you to step out of your vehicle.” The woman told police she became scared, exited the vehicle and remained near the driver-side mirror.
Court documents state Fields then identified himself as a police officer and asked where college students were having parties. The woman told investigators she advised Fields she did not know. Police said Fields also stated he was a New York police officer before leaving the area and traveling toward Union Street and the Christopher Center Library.
According to investigators, Fields was located a short time later exiting Duffy’s Bar and approaching a black Ford Escape. Police said he was still wearing a black baseball hat with the word “POLICE” written in white letters.
