Antwon C. Oliver was charged June 10 with murder in Lake County following a fatal shooting that occurred June 9 in the 100 block of East 5th Avenue in Gary.

According to court records, Gary police were called to investigate a shooting after the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds. An autopsy later determined the victim died from a gunshot wound to the arm and chest and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators alleged the incident stemmed from a dispute involving clothing. Court documents state a woman arrived at the residence and removed clothing belonging to the victim from an apartment before placing the items in the trunk of her vehicle. When the victim arrived to recover his belongings, a struggle reportedly occurred near the vehicle.

Police said Oliver later admitted he exited the vehicle carrying a .300 Blackout AR-style pistol after hearing the woman yelling. During an interview with detectives, Oliver allegedly gave multiple accounts of how the firearm discharged, at one point claiming he fired into the air and later stating the weapon accidentally went off. Investigators noted Oliver admitted the victim was not armed and was holding a shoebox when he was shot.

Court records indicate witnesses reported seeing a man flee the scene carrying what appeared to be a rifle immediately after a gunshot was heard. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators allegedly showed the suspect approaching the victim moments before the victim collapsed and then running from the area while carrying a firearm.

Police later took Oliver into custody a short distance from the scene while allegedly in possession of the firearm. Investigators reported no firearm was recovered from the victim and found no evidence he possessed one during the encounter.

During questioning, Oliver allegedly asked investigators, “Are they going to go easy on me because this is my first offense?” according to court records.
