Hammond Police Update On 18 Year Old Female Shot In Head & Arrest Of Suspects

On March 26th, at approximately 6:30 PM, Hammond police were dispatched to the Hudson Gas station at 169th and Arizona in reference to a shooting that just occurred, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police. 

Officers spoke with a witness who stated a black male was outside of his vehicle when another vehicle pulled into the parking lot. The witness stated that the suspect began shooting at the vehicle that pulled into the lot. The suspect was described as a black male, short hair, wearing a multi-colored sweater, Kellogg stated. Officers learned that the victim vehicle drove a short distance from the scene and the driver contacted police. 

The victim is an 18-year-old female from Hammond. She was struck by one bullet in the head, Kellogg stated. She was transported to an area hospital and is believed to be in stable condition at this time. Suspect vehicle information was obtained and given out to local police departments. At approximately 6:50 PM, Whiting Police Department officers advised that they located the vehicle and attempted to perform a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from Whiting police and eventually crashed in East Chicago at a construction site on 136th & Guthrie. Three subjects inside of the suspect vehicle ran from the vehicle, Kellogg told RNS. All three subjects were apprehended by Whiting, East Chicago, and Hammond officers. 

The suspects arrested are a 27-year-old black male, a 30-year-old black male, and a 21-year-old black female from East Chicago. Detectives are currently investigating the cause of the situation and additional information will be released when it is available, Kellogg said.

UPDATE – On March 28th, The Hammond Police Department and Lake County Prosecutor’s Office charged 27-year-old Anthony Devante Cobb from East Chicago with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Battery, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, and Resisting Law Enforcement. Mr. Cobb is in custody in the Lake County Jail.
