Stolen Jeep Pursuit Ends With Crash On 80/94

On Tuesday, 9/27/2022 around 9:51 AM, an Officer from the Gary Police Department was in the area of 19th Ave and Hanley Street when he located a Jeep Cherokee which returned stolen from Minneapolis, Minnesota, according to Commander Jack Hamady.

The Officer was investigating on scene when an unknown male approached the stolen vehicle and then entered it taking off in the vehicle. The officer initiated a traffic stop on the Jeep and the driver refused to stop taking off at a high rate of speed, Hamady said.

Officers pursued the stolen Jeep westbound on to I-80 where the driver struck several vehicles on I-80 just east of Cline Ave exit ramp.  The driver was taken into custody and Indiana State Police will be handling the crash investigation.

Gary Fire Department arrived on scene and checked the occupants of the other vehicles for any injuries.

Officers are still on scene as of 12:30 PM concluding the crash investigation and westbound traffic flow has been disrupted.

The adult driver will be taken to the Gary City Jail for booking and charges for auto theft and resisting law enforcement will be presented to the Lake County Prosecutors Office.
