LAKE COUNTY — A 23-year-old Lake Village man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after Indiana State Police say a road rage confrontation escalated into gunfire on an interstate ramp in Lake County.
According to Sgt. Glen Fifield of the Indiana State Police, troopers were dispatched at approximately 1:50 p.m. to a report of shots fired on the I-65 northbound ramp to I-80 eastbound.
A 911 caller reported that the driver of a Honda Civic fired a shot toward her vehicle, shattering one of its windows during the encounter. Troopers located the victim on the ramp to Central Avenue, while the suspect had stopped his vehicle on I-80 just before the Central Avenue exit ramp.
Police said the victim suffered minor injuries from shattered glass but was not struck by the bullet.
Responding troopers detained the driver of the Honda Civic until Indiana State Police detectives arrived to investigate. During the investigation, detectives recovered a loaded FN Five-seveN 5.7×28 handgun from the suspect’s vehicle.
Investigators determined the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident that began while both vehicles were traveling northbound on I-65.
The suspect was identified as Gavin J. McCammon, 23, of Lake Village, Indiana. He was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail, where he is being preliminarily held on a charge of Level 5 Felony Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon.
Final charging decisions will be made by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
Indiana State Police noted this marks the second road rage-related shooting incident on Northwest Indiana interstate highways in the past two weeks.
Troopers are reminding motorists to avoid engaging with aggressive drivers. If confronted by someone exhibiting road rage, police advise drivers to slow down, avoid retaliating, create distance from the other vehicle when possible, and call 911. Authorities warn that retaliatory actions or introducing a weapon into a confrontation can quickly lead to tragic consequences.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
