A Gary man, Edward Russell Jr., is facing four counts of murder in connection with a 2002 quadruple homicide investigation in Lake County, according to court documents.
According to the probable cause affidavit, investigators reviewed reports from multiple law enforcement agencies, forensic laboratories, and witness statements related to the February 2002 killings of Mary Ann Wrencher and three additional victims identified as Lenard Johnson, Barbara Hall, and Curtis Hall.
Police were first dispatched on February 9, 2002, to a residence in the 800 block of Kentucky Street in Gary for a report of a female found down. The victim, identified as Mary Ann Wrencher, was located deceased with multiple stab wounds, including injuries to her neck, chest, arm, and hands. An autopsy later ruled her death a homicide.
Witnesses told investigators that Russell had been at the residence earlier that morning and had been involved in ongoing arguments with Wrencher. One witness reported Wrencher called around 4:00 a.m. stating Russell was “kicking on my door.”
Another witness stated she heard Russell outside the residence yelling, “Open this mother f****** door,” while attempting to gain entry.
Investigators noted a gold ring believed to belong to Russell was located near a puddle of blood at the scene.
According to the affidavit, witnesses described prior incidents of violence between Russell and Wrencher, including allegations that he choked, struck, and threatened to kill her.
Days later, on February 12, 2002, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of Virginia Street in Gary to check on the welfare of occupants. Upon entry, officers located three individuals deceased inside the home and a detached garage.
All three victims were found to have suffered stab wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides. Investigators documented blood throughout the residence, signs of a struggle, and multiple weapons present at the scene.
According to court documents, a vehicle belonging to one of the victims was later found abandoned near Interstate 94, and additional stolen vehicles were connected to the timeline following the killings.
Witnesses reported seeing Russell in possession of a vehicle matching one of those involved shortly after the murders, and investigators noted his presence in areas connected to the case.
Police also documented prior incidents in which Russell was accused of battering Wrencher, including a case in which she reported he punched, choked, and threatened to kill her.
Court records show Russell was formally charged on July 2, 2025. The case remains pending.
