Andrew Scott Vanator, 41, of Portage, has been charged in Porter County after authorities alleged he left his registered residence without notifying the Porter County Sheriff’s Office as required by law.
According to court documents, Porter County Adult Probation contacted the Porter County Sheriff’s Office on June 10 after registered sex offender Andrew Vanator reportedly missed multiple scheduled probation appointments and could not be reached by phone. Authorities determined the phone number Vanator had provided for the sex offender registry did not match the number probation had on file.
Court records state investigators learned Vanator had moved out around June 1, 2026, and that his current whereabouts were unknown.
According to court documents, investigators later learned Vanator had moved out in February and lived at a residence on Carnation Avenue in Portage. After his ankle monitor was removed, he allegedly moved to an unknown location in Lake Station before returning to the residence in the 5600 block of Clem Road in May. Court records state Vanator registered the Carnation Avenue address from February 2 until May 12, 2026, when he updated his registration back to the Clem Road residence.
Court records state investigators were told that after a trip to South Bend on May 29, Vanator’s belongings were gone from the residence the following morning, and the cell phone he had been using was left on the kitchen table.
According to court documents, investigators checked Indiana’s Offender Watch database and the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Registry, both of which still listed Vanator’s registered address as the Clem Road residence. Investigators also determined Vanator had not registered in any other jurisdiction. Court records state the Indiana Department of Correction classifies Vanator as both a Sex Offender and a Serious Sex Offender, requiring lifetime registration.
Court records state Vanator was convicted in St. Joseph County in 2005 of Child Molesting involving a 13-year-old female and Sexual Misconduct with a Minor involving a 14-year-old female. Those convictions require lifetime registration as a sex offender.
Charges filed June 25, 2026:
