MICHIGAN CITY — Detectives with the La Porte County Drug Task Force recovered three firearms and made four arrests during a targeted enforcement operation conducted in response to a reported “teen takeover” gathering at the Michigan City beach.

According to a press release issued Tuesday, the initiative, dubbed Operation Safe Shore, was carried out by the La Porte County Drug Task Force, an Indiana HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) Initiative, following concerns about a large gathering of teens at the beach and surrounding areas.

Authorities said the operation was designed to address public safety concerns and ensure a safe environment for residents and visitors utilizing Michigan City’s waterfront. Detectives conducted proactive enforcement efforts aimed at identifying criminal activity and enforcing applicable laws during the event.

As a result of the operation, investigators recovered three firearms and arrested four individuals. Specific details regarding the arrests and the circumstances surrounding the firearm recoveries have not yet been released.

“Our priority is protecting the safety of our community and visitors to Michigan City,” Michigan City Police Chief Steven Forker said in a statement. “The recovery of three firearms and the arrests made during Operation Safe Shore demonstrate our commitment to addressing criminal activity and preventing potentially dangerous situations before they escalate.”

The La Porte County Drug Task Force said it continues to work alongside local, county, and state law enforcement agencies to identify and address threats to public safety throughout La Porte County. Officials noted that proactive operations such as Operation Safe Shore are intended to help maintain safe public spaces for residents and visitors.

The enforcement effort comes as communities across Northwest Indiana and neighboring areas have experienced concerns over large youth gatherings, often referred to as “teen takeovers,” at beaches, parks, and other public venues.

Authorities indicated that additional information regarding the arrests and any formal charges will be released through the judicial process as it becomes available.
