LAKE COUNTY — A Hammond man has been arrested in connection with a road rage shooting that occurred Sunday evening on Interstate 80/94 near the Burr Street exit ramp.
According to the Indiana State Police, on June 10, 2026, members of the Gary Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee that had been identified as the suspect vehicle involved in the June 8 shooting. During the stop, 25-year-old Jaymiere Johnson of Hammond was taken into custody by Indiana State Police detectives and transported to the Lake County Jail.
The shooting occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday on the westbound Burr Street off-ramp from I-80/94. The victim, who had been shot, managed to drive to the parking lot of the nearby Hard Rock Casino and call for help. Investigators initially believed the incident stemmed from a road rage encounter. The victim’s Jeep was found riddled with bullet holes, including damage to the windshield.
State Police said charges against Johnson will be forwarded to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Additional information is expected to be released once formal charges have been approved.
Detectives from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post Investigations Bureau credited the Gary Police Department and the Gary Police Real Time Crime Center for their assistance in identifying the suspect. Investigators also recognized Trooper Jace Haddon, who responded to the traffic stop while off-duty and assisted throughout the three-day investigation.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
