Schererville Officer Struck By Suspect Vehicle

On May 13th, 2020 at 11:14pm, Schererville Police Department Patrol Officers were dispatched to a business at 7809 E. US 30 for a report of a suspicious male subject inside of a white Cadillac SUV parked in the rear of the business, according to Schererville Police Deputy Chief Jeff Cook. It was also reported to officers the vehicle had parked there on several occasions leaving behind empty beer cans and cigarette butts. Officers arrived, found a man crying with his pants in disarray and asked him on several occasions to step from inside the vehicle to further investigate, Cook stated. The subject, later identified as 34 year old Jorge Antonio Alvarez, of Schererville, Indiana, stated “okay give me a second” before starting the vehicle and driving off while striking one officer.  Alvarez fled from the scene in his vehicle at a high rate of speed eastbound onto US 30, officers attempted to catch up to Alvarez, however, were unable to locate him.   

Alvarez was charged by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office on May 18th, 2020 with one count of Battery By Means Of A Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony and one count of Resisting Law Enforcement Using A Vehicle, a Level 6 Felony.

On May 26th, 2020 Alvarez turned himself in on the warrant and was released from custody after posting a $3,000.00 cash bond.  The officer that was struck suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Cook told RNS. The officer has since been released back to duty.
