Suspect Dead After Crash Running From Gary Police

Gary Police pursuit ends with suspect launching a vehicle over a ditch and succumbing to his injuries on scene Wednesday evening.

Around 8:45 PM Wednesday, Gary Police MAG Units were in the area of 39th & Georgia when they came upon a crash involving a Buick and a Dodge, according to Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady. The officer activated his lights and began walking up to the scene when the driver of the Buick reversed and hit a pole then fled the crash scene, Hamady told RNS. Gary Officers began to pursue the Buick through the Glen Park section of Gary. Officers lost sight of the Buick near 35th & Grant but were advised by Lake County Aviation unit the suspect vehicle was at 35th & Chase, Hamady told RNS. The Buick apparently had lost control at the T intersection and launched the vehicle over a ditch and into a field about 100 yards out around 8:54 PM.

When officers arrived at this scene they found a male adult in the Buick unresponsive but barely breathing. Gary Fire Department arrived and confirmed the male had succumbed to his injuries.

The Lake County Coroner and Lake County Sheriff Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident. Check back for identity of the suspect when information becomes available.
