Warming Shelters In Place If Needed In Porter

With temperatures currently predicted to drop into the single digits and below, beginning this weekend, Duneland’s Tri-Towns will be making warming shelters available to those in need.

NOTE: All those seeking assistance at a municipal warming shelter will be required to wear masks and practice social-distancing.

In Chesterton: At Town Manager Dave Cincoski’s direction, the town hall meeting room, 726 Broadway, will be open as a warming shelter. A limited number of cots and blankets will be available. Mask-wearing and social-distancing will be required of those using the meeting room.

In Porter: Residents in need of a warming shelter are being asked FIRST to call the Porter Police Department at (219) 926-7611. They will then be directed to one of several possible locations, including the Community Building in Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Drive; and the Porter fire station, 550 Beam St. Mask-wearing and social-distancing will be required of those using either location.

In Burns Harbor: The Burns Harbor fire station, 308 Navajo Trail—and secondarily, if needed, the town hall, 1240 N. Boo Road—will be available as warming shelters. However, residents are being asked FIRST to call the BHFD at (219) 787-8591 so firefighters may make accommodations. Mask-wearing and social-distancing will be required of those using either location.
