According to court documents, Alex Brendon Honeycutt, 23, of Westville, is accused of burglarizing a former rental residence after allegedly returning to remove a refrigerator he believed should have been deducted from his security deposit.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the property owner reported that his former tenant had entered the residence without permission and that a silver GE refrigerator was missing. A neighbor later located the refrigerator about a block away in Westville. Investigators confirmed it was the missing appliance because the freezer handle was missing.

Police said they traced the refrigerator to a residence where a relative told officers Honeycutt was staying. When questioned, Honeycutt allegedly stated, “I took it from my old place I was renting and assumed since it was broken the property owner would take it off the security deposit.” Investigators informed him, “that’s not how that works.”

After being taken to the Westville Police Department and advised of his rights, Honeycutt allegedly repeated that he had taken the refrigerator when he moved out and believed “it would just come out of the security deposit.” When asked when he removed the appliance, Honeycutt allegedly replied that it had been “a few days ago.” After being told the refrigerator had still been inside the residence on June 14, Honeycutt allegedly explained that he “went back because he was in the process of moving out.”

Investigators then asked how he entered the residence. According to the affidavit, Honeycutt stated he used the side or rear door and “had to apply force to the door to open it.” Police noted that the door showed no signs of damage or forced entry. Officers also observed that a rear window was open and the screen was missing and broken inside the residence. Honeycutt allegedly insisted that he “did not enter through the window but through the door.”

Police said Honeycutt admitted he entered the residence to remove the refrigerator and acknowledged that he exited through the front door with it. When asked whether anyone helped him, Honeycutt allegedly said “yes” and claimed it was his “union rep Austin,” but he was unable to provide a last name. Investigators ultimately concluded Honeycutt entered the residence through a rear window with the intent to remove the refrigerator, which they said did not belong to him.

Lodged in the Laporte County Jail.
