Two Shot In East Chicago In Parked Car

On Wednesday 7/8/2020 at approximately  9:04pm East Chicago Police responded to a Shot Spotter notification of numerous shots being fired in the area of 3939 Carey Street, according to Deputy Chief Jose Rivera of The East Chicago Police. Officers proceeded to the area where the shots were being fired and located a vehicle in the area damaged by gunfire as well as the residence at 3939 Carey Street, Rivera stated. While on scene police were advised by dispatch that Hammond Police located a gunshot victim in their city that stated he was shot in East Chicago. East Chicago Police proceeded to Hammond to speak with the victim, but the victim was transported to Christ Memorial Hospital in Oak Lawn Illinois.

The victim was identified as a 22 year old Hammond resident. The victim suffered 2 gunshot wounds to his lower back, 1 to his abdomen and 1 to his right shoulder. East Chicago Police then proceeded to Christ Memorial Hospital to speak with the victim. The victim advised officers that he left his girlfriends house and sat in his parked car on Carey Street listening to music while smoking a blunt. A short time later he heard shots. Several bullets came through his car and struck him. He stated he ran to a house for help but nobody answered the door, so he got back in his car and went home to call 911.  Victim stated that he didn’t see the shooter. 

At 11:00pm East Chicago Police were then notified of a second victim from the shots fired call on Carey Street. Dispatch advised that the second victim, a 27 year old Gary resident was at South Suburban Medical Center in Hazel Crest Illinois. East Chicago Police proceeded to South Suburban Medical center and spoke with the victim. The victim stated he was rolling a blunt with his friend in a vehicle when shots rang out and he got shot. Victim suffered a graze wound to his head and a gunshot wound to his right lower leg. Victim also stated he didn’t see the shooter.
