Uhaul Truck Leads Police On Chase From Hobart To Chicago

At approximately 5 a.m. Corporal Kenneth Williams of the Hobart Police Department was driving westbound on East 37th avenue also known as East Ridge Road and heard an audible alarm coming from the Cycle Sports Yamaha dealer located at 8544 East Ridge Road in Hobart.  Corporal Williams investigated and observed two males pushing dirt bikes out of the business into a U-Haul truck that was backed up to the front door. He observed a front window to be shattered, Sgt Nicholas Wardrip of The Hobart Police stated. These two males jumped into the U-Haul truck and fled from Corporal Williams westbound on 37th Avenue. Officers pursued the vehicle onto northbound 65 and then westbound 80/94, Wardrip said.   Hammond Police and Chicago Police attempted spike strips unsuccessfully, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez told RNS. The Uhaul struck 2 parked cars in Illinois and bailed on foot.The U-Haul truck subsequently crashed at the 87th Street exit of I-94 in Chicago. Both subjects fled on foot and were apprehended inside a garage in the 8800 block of South State Street.  

Officers recovered a number of dirt bikes which were subsequently returned to Cycle Sports, Wardrip stated. Sheriff Martinez said, 6 dirt bikes were recovered in the box truck.

Two Chicago men were taken into custody and are currently being held in Chicago pending the presentation of charges at the Lake County Prosecutor’s office.

In custody are Sherman Jett, 30, of Chicago and Antoine White, 26, of Chicago.

Jett has been charged with burglary and Resisting Law Enforcement and White with Burglary through Lake County Superior Court.  Both are in custody in Cook County awaiting extradition back to Indiana.
