Merrillville Police Terminate Pursuit Thursday For Safety Reasons

A Merrillville Police Officer was on routine patrol Thursday morning around 10:36 AM when he observed a speeding Audi SUV in the 6400 block of Hendricks, according to Assistant Chief Kosta Nuses.

The vehicle was clocked on radar at 65 mph in a 30 mph zone, Nuses said. A traffic stop was initiated and the Audi was curbed. When the officer exited his squad car, the Audi fled.

The officer pursued the Audi till about Ridge & Burr in Calumet Township. The officer then determined it was far too dangerous to continue and terminated the pursuit due to speeds and traffic.

“As of late everybody wants to run from the police, in my 15 years of law enforcement I’ve never seen anything like it,” Nuses said. “All I can say is excellent job by the officers involved. I have the utmost confidence that every one of my officers are capable of making the right decisions,” Nuses added.
